How to sync the T-Mobile G2 with Outlook

The T-Mobile G2 is a new Android slider, released today on (you get one guess) T-Mobile. Many new G2 owners are migrating from older BlackBerrys or Windows Mobile devices, and will be looking for a way to sync the G2 with Outlook. Google provides the free Google Calendar Sync tool to sync the primary Outlook calendar with any Google account. The T-Mobile G2 can automatically sync contacts and calendar with a Google account through its wireless data connection. However, Google provides no support to sync contacts or other data types, such as tasks and notes.

CompanionLink offers two ways to sync the G2 with Outlook – wired USB sync and wireless sync through Google. Forbes and NY Times Recommend CompanionLink’s BlackBerry Sync with Outlook 2010

Not so long ago, RIM updated their Desktop Software package to support Microsoft Outlook 2010. However, they only offered support for the 32-bit edition of Outlook 2010, not the 64-bit edition. CompanionLink announced compatibility with both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Microsoft Outlook 2010 with BlackBerry and other mobile devices. Recently, popular publications Forbes and the New York Times reviewed CompanionLink’s sync solution for BlackBerry with Outlook 2010.

In the New York Times Personal Tech Q&A section, columnist J. D. Biersdorfer mentions that official support documents from BlackBerry indicate that BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0 is not compatible with Microsoft Outlook 2010 64-bit. Biersdorfer suggests CompanionLink as a solution for synchronizing with BlackBerry devices.

A post on the Forbes Investor blog by writer Marc Gerstein highlights his frustrating experience spending hours trying to sync his BlackBerry Tour with Outlook 2010. Gerstein points out that his frustrations are shared with many BlackBerry owners facing similar sync problems. Gmail now has voice calling functionality. You can call any standard telephone number right within Gmail. If you have your contact information stored in Gmail, calling a contact is as easy as just clicking on their Contact record. Syncing data from different Outlook folders and sub-folders

CompanionLink will sync data from Outlook folder.  The software will list the available folders (even Public Folders if you’re using Exchange), and let you choose which on to sync data from.  CompanionLink will synchronize data in that folder and any sub-folders under it.

To synchronize data from multiple different Outlook folders, you need CompanionLink Professional.  This version has as a feature called Category Manager that allows you to assign synchronization of different folders to a Category on the phone.  When you add a new Contact to the right Category on the phone, it automatically goes to the right folder in Outlook.

Category Manager also works great with the DejaOffice app for Android, iPad and iPhone.

Datamation published an article written by IT analyst Jeff Vance highlighting the top smartphone apps for mobile productivity. Jeff recommends the DejaOffice app as a great way to keep contacts and calendar events organized. The app allows advanced features like linking contacts to calendar events and creating categories.

Last week, RIM released the new Version 6 of their BlackBerry Desktop Software, used to synchronize BlackBerry devices via a USB cable with Compatible PC software. CompanionLink extends support to many other PC applications by functioning as an add-in within the BlackBerry Desktop software. The problem is that upon release of Blackberry Desktop Software 6, all 3rd party add-in support was seemingly non-existent. Many users reported problems with a wide variety of add-ins, not just CompanionLink. The problem was further aggravated by the fact that uninstalling version 6 and reverting back to (stable) version 5 still left add-in support broken.

We have been working tirelessly since the release of the Blackberry Desktop Software 6 find a fix for the many users who depend on CompanionLink to sync their PC data to their BlackBerry devices.
