The first thing you’ll notice when you open the latest update of DejaOffice for iOS is the crisp new graphics. We’ve refreshed the entire app with Retina graphics, perfect for those with the iPhone 4/4S and the new iPad. Beneath the fresh look, though, there’s even more…

Contact Photos

We’ve added the ability to sync pictures to DejaContacts. Now you’ll always be able to attach a face to the name of your next meeting. Due to the way the iPhone handles USB sync, this feature is only available when syncing via WiFi.

Category Enhancements

We’ve redesigned the categories app to make it faster and more reliable. Category colors will now sync from your computer to DejaOffice. If blue equals “Sales” on your PC, it will equal “Sales” in DejaOffice. A small improvement that makes a big difference!

A Better iPad Workflow

The process of adding or editing data has been streamlined. We’ve made use of popovers to allow you to quickly and easily edit categories, times, dates, priorities, contact links, and more. This adds up to a more efficient workflow for you. And who doesn’t want that?

Overall Performance Improvements

Buttons are easier to tap, data loads faster, you can swipe between records from the details view, and the search function has been improved. Not only that, we’ve squashed a number of pesky bugs. Check out the full release notes for a list of what’s been fixed.

Seasons greetings from Microsoft to NOOK

Microsoft’s cash infusion into the NOOK platform ensures the device family will be around for holiday season 2012. Great news for people looking for a tablet that’s not married to the Amazon or Apple ecosystems. It also ensures the price wars for tablets continue, and the consumer is able to get a tablet-form device for a fraction of the cost of more expensive systems that do just one thing well (e.g., gaming systems).

The NOOK Color is really a well-made device. With a few 3rd party apps, you can outfit NOOK to be your all-in-one tool for reading, entertainment, and business productivity. Self-plug: we just released our DejaOffice mobile CRM app for the NOOK. It transforms your NOOK into a business tool that carries your address book, appointments, tasks and notes – all in one integrated app. You can even sync the NOOK to Micrsoft Outlook on your computer.

Will a (virtual) keyboard save RIM and the BlackBerry device?

The biggest news item from BlackBerry World 2012 is the new virtual keyboard on the BB OS 10. It uses magic (e.g., predictive analysis and the like) to suggest words you are attempting to type before you can finish typing. You can simply flick the suggested words up to apply them.

Neat, but definitely not a leapfrog in technology. RIM really needs a leapfrog to stay relevant. Gartner predicts RIM has lost nearly half of their market to Apple and Google.

Why we can’t sync Windows Phone 7 via USB (Yet)

Edit note: CompanionLink can now synchronize with USB and Windows Phones.

CompanionLink has a long history of offering direct sync with all major smartphone platforms including Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Palm webOS, and the previous Microsoft Windows Mobile platform. When Windows Phone 7 was announced, we jumped to be the first to offer PIM synchronization for the platform.

Unfortunately, we discovered there is no way to interface with the device using USB protocol. Also, we lack the necessary app permissions to write contacts, calendar, tasks and notes to the device. Double-whammy; our hands are tied in two ways. Unfortunately, this means that CompanionLink, as well as any other third-party developers, won’t be able to offer direct sync to the Windows Phone platform until the tools are provided.

We’ve asked Microsoft about this issue, but have not yet received a reply. It’s possible Microsoft may open more options for developers in the future. We eagerly await that day!

How to Sync Your Android Phone and Tablet with CompanionLink

Did you know that you can sync both an Android phone and tablet with just one license of CompanionLink for Outlook?

When you’re syncing Android devices with Outlook, we’ve designed a feature that allows you to swap devices in CompanionLink 5 for Outlook without adjusting any other configuration.

The secret lies in our USB and WiFi sync options. Simply switch the phone and tablet at any time – there’s no extra configuration required – and your data will sync effortlessly.

Note that this only works when syncing via USB and WiFi. For syncing multiple devices via CompanionLink Secure Hosted, Google, or Windows Live, you’ll need CompanionLink Express 5 or CompanionLink Professional 5.

Sync the Nokia Lumia 900 with Outlook

Is the Nokia Lumia 900 the latest must-have Windows Phone? All signs point to yes.Positioned as a flagship Windows Phone, the Lumia 900 has been making a big impression among many early reviewers. And with its 4.3″ display, snappy 1.4GHz processor, 8MP camera, and beautiful form factor, these positive reviews seem to be well-earned. The Lumia 900 is, by all means, a solid phone at a great price.

Despite the positive reviews, however, the Lumia 900 is lacking in one big area. Many business users want to know how to sync the Nokia Lumia 900 with Outlook. The HTC One X has made its official debut, and it’s earning its fair share of favorable reviews. In fact, it is quickly becoming a top contender for being the best Android smartphone on the market today.

An Update on Syncing With Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich

CompanionLink fully supports two-way sync with Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) devices.

The latest version of Android, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, officially launched a few months back with the Galaxy Nexus. Beyond that, however, sightings of Ice Cream Sandwich on new or existing devices have been few and far between. That’s starting to change.

Just last week, HTC officially released the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the Vivid on AT&T. The updates don’t stop there, though. AT&T announced plans to update 10 more Android smartphones and tablets in the near future. And that’s just from one carrier. The others are following suit as well.

At CompanionLink, we’ve had our hands on Ice Cream Sandwich for a while via our Galaxy Nexus. And we’ve been taking advantage of that. Not only have we ensured that DejaOffice runs properly on Android 4.0, but we’ve been busy adding features and improvements designed with this update in mind. For example, some Android 4.0 devices, like the Galaxy Nexus, don’t play nicely with out existing USB sync. To that end, we’ve developed an entirely new USB sync system. It’s even better than before, and it’s in beta right now. We’ll have more on that later.

We’re also taking the time to improve the interface and bring it more in line with the look and feel that Ice Cream Sandwich features. Expect to see those updates soon as well.

PSA: Secure Your Mobile Devices

Think about all the data you have on your phone. These days, that’s more than just a list of phone numbers. We have email accounts, social networking profiles, mobile banking, private notes and documents, and so much more. If our phones were lost and consequently found by someone with less than honest intentions, the list of potentially compromised information would be daunting.

But just how bad could losing your phone be? Symantec recently decided to find out. They intentionally “lost” 50 Android smartphones across various large cities in the US and Canada. Each device was loaded with what appeared to be private data and fitted with special software that allowed Symantec to track what happened. The results? Well, they’re not promising.

Over 95% of the time, those who found the lost device made an attempt to access data such as email or online banking information.

Let that sink in for a minute. Based on the results of this study, it is safe to assume that if you lose your phone, someone will be poking through all your private and personal data. On a slightly happier note, some sort of attempt was made to return the phone about half the time. But even in those cases most people went snooping around first. Some even directly admitted to doing so, apologizing after the fact. Check out the full report here [PDF].

The moral of the story? Ensure your data is secure! Whether this is through a passcode or gesture based lock, remote wipe capabilities, encrypted data, private records (in the case of DejaOffice), or some combination of these. Your phone simply contains too much personal data to remain unsecured in some way.

Don’t let its simple design and unassuming price fool you – the Lumia packs a lot of bang for your buck. It really is a nice phone for the money.

And at the low price of free on contract from T-Mobile, it’s easily one of the best buys for those who want a great smartphone, but don’t need something with the power (or price) of the Galaxy Nexus or DROID RAZR, for example.

The Lumia 710 runs the latest version of Windows Phone – 7.5, or “Mango” as it’s often referred to. Combined with the great price, the unique tile-based interface of the Windows Phone platform has made the Lumia 710 one of the more popular devices on T-Mobile.

Introducing DejaConnect – USB Syncing Now Easier Than Ever

Syncing via USB shouldn’t be complicated.

It used to be that you could you could just plug in your phone to the computer and it would automatically start syncing. Somewhere along the way, we lost that standard.

Sure, today’s devices can sync with the cloud out of the box. That works well for some, but many of us still need the good, old-fashioned security of a USB sync. With DejaConnect USB, we’re making that sync easier than ever.

DejaConnect allows you to simply plug in your device to begin a sync. That’s it. It really can’t get much easier than that.

The first sync with DejaConnect mode requires a brief setup. After that, it’s up to you whether it syncs automatically when you plug it in, or only after you press sync. With DejaConnect, sync just happens. You don’t have to think about it, or worry if you’re doing it right. We’ll take care of the heavy lifting and let you focus on what’s important to you.
