7 Best Android Learning Apps

As your child grows, they’ll need your help in school less. Part of this is from independence and learning more. The other part is knowing where to find high school and college homework help. One useful tool for students is learning apps, which focus on teaching them how to do problems instead of just providing answers. Here are seven of the best apps for Android users. These are perfect for students, as well as adult learners who want to refresh on something or learn something new.

1. Khan’s Academy

Khan’s Academy has versions for children and adults. It has over 10,000 lessons and is completely free to use. Many of its subjects are more common, which is great for struggling students or adults who want to brush up on lessons. Some of the areas it covers include math, science, physics, English, economics, and others.

2. DuoLingo

DuoLingo is perfect for anyone trying to learn a second (or third) language. The app is full of fun games that make learning vocabulary easy and enjoyable. According to the designers, spending 34 hours on this app teaches as much as a semester in school. Currently, there are over a dozen languages offered such as Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, and French.

3. Amazon Kindle

Amazon Kindle is not just for entertainment reading. It is also full of reference guides and books on any topic students can think of. This can be useful if they are researching a topic or need extra information on a subject. As an added benefit, students can buy textbooks. This means they do not have to lug their book home every night.

4. Coursera

Coursera is its own online school. It is best for older students who need extra help or adult learners. There are more than 1,000 different courses available, each of them with video content, access to reading material, and lectures. At the end of each course, a certificate of completion is given to students.

5.  PhotoMath

PhotoMath works with your phone’s camera. It is useful for students or parents. Simply take a picture of the problem and wait for the explanation and answer. The major benefit comes from the explanation since it walks students through the steps toward a solution.

6. Wolfram Alpha

This is a more advanced app that might benefit high school or college students. It can be used for all types of information and works as a calculator. Some subjects covered include data analysis, physics, mathematics, engineering, geography, weather, astronomy, and more.

7. LinkedIn Learning

While this will not help the average student, this is a great app for adult professional learning. It is free to use and covers job skills. This could even benefit students considering their first job. Some topics covered include office skills and creative skills.

Parents and tutors are not students’ only options for assignment help. Learning apps for Android users are a great alternative for help. The best apps will guide students in finding the answer rather than doing the work for them. This ensures they are prepared come test time while providing the extra help they need to succeed.

Syncing the Samsung Galaxy S III

The Galaxy S III’s predecessor, aptly name the Galaxy S II, has been one of the most popular Android phones among our customers over the past year. And based on what we’ve heard about the new Galaxy S III, we’re expecting it to be quite popular as well.

The HTC One X has made its official debut, and it’s earning its fair share of favorable reviews. In fact, it is quickly becoming a top contender for being the best Android smartphone on the market today.

An Update on Syncing With Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich

CompanionLink fully supports two-way sync with Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) devices.

The latest version of Android, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, officially launched a few months back with the Galaxy Nexus. Beyond that, however, sightings of Ice Cream Sandwich on new or existing devices have been few and far between. That’s starting to change.

Just last week, HTC officially released the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the Vivid on AT&T. The updates don’t stop there, though. AT&T announced plans to update 10 more Android smartphones and tablets in the near future. And that’s just from one carrier. The others are following suit as well.

At CompanionLink, we’ve had our hands on Ice Cream Sandwich for a while via our Galaxy Nexus. And we’ve been taking advantage of that. Not only have we ensured that DejaOffice runs properly on Android 4.0, but we’ve been busy adding features and improvements designed with this update in mind. For example, some Android 4.0 devices, like the Galaxy Nexus, don’t play nicely with out existing USB sync. To that end, we’ve developed an entirely new USB sync system. It’s even better than before, and it’s in beta right now. We’ll have more on that later.

We’re also taking the time to improve the interface and bring it more in line with the look and feel that Ice Cream Sandwich features. Expect to see those updates soon as well.

Introducing DejaConnect – USB Syncing Now Easier Than Ever

Syncing via USB shouldn’t be complicated.

It used to be that you could you could just plug in your phone to the computer and it would automatically start syncing. Somewhere along the way, we lost that standard.

Sure, today’s devices can sync with the cloud out of the box. That works well for some, but many of us still need the good, old-fashioned security of a USB sync. With DejaConnect USB, we’re making that sync easier than ever.

DejaConnect allows you to simply plug in your device to begin a sync. That’s it. It really can’t get much easier than that.

The first sync with DejaConnect mode requires a brief setup. After that, it’s up to you whether it syncs automatically when you plug it in, or only after you press sync. With DejaConnect, sync just happens. You don’t have to think about it, or worry if you’re doing it right. We’ll take care of the heavy lifting and let you focus on what’s important to you.

How to Sync Your Google Tasks with Outlook

Google Tasks can be great – they’re easy to use and tied to your existing Gmail or Google Apps account. It’s definitely convenient. Getting tasks out of Gmail or Google Apps, however, can be anything but convenient. Until now.

CompanionLink has supported syncing Google Tasks for some time, but it was limited to a single task list within Google. With our most recent update to CompanionLink 5, you are now able to sync multiple Google Task lists with Outlook and DejaOffice.

Here’s how it works.

If a task in Outlook has a category that matches a task list name in Google, then the Outlook task will sync to that list in Google. Similarly, if a task in Google has a task list name that matches a category in Outlook, then the Google task will sync to that category in Outlook.

Alternatively, if a task in Outlook does not have a category that matches a task list name in Google, then the Outlook task will sync to the default list in Google. If the opposite is true and a task in Google has a task list name that is not a category in Outlook, CompanionLink will create a matching category as part of the sync process.

With an estimated 5.5 million Fires sold last quarter, it’s safe to say this is one hot tablet! But how do you make this great little tablet work for you when it comes time to get down to business? That’s where CompanionLink comes in!

Over 25 New Smartphones and Tablets Unveiled At CES 2012

The 2012 Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas may be winding down, but things are just getting started at CompanionLink. By my count, over 25 new smartphones and tablets were announced at CES this year. They range from high-end smartphones to budget-friendly tablets, and from Android to Windows Phone.

As these devices are released over the next few months, we’ll be taking a closer look at them and testing them to ensure compatibility with CompanionLink and DejaOffice. It is our intention to support all of these new devices announced at CES. Stay tuned to the blog for updates on this!

And for those interested in what was announced at CES, but haven’t had time to parse through the countless articles, here’s a short list of just some of what you can look forward to over the next few months:

The Galaxy Note

The Galaxy Note from Samsung has been around internationally for a few months, but is finally coming to those of us in the US. Described as a “phablet” by some, this phone features a beautiful 5.3” screen and a stylus. It’s great for productivity buffs and creative types alike.

The Galaxy Nexus on Sprint

Another bit of good news from Samsung – the Galaxy Nexus is expanding its userbase to Sprint customers. No longer a Verizon exclusive, the Galaxy Nexus will be landing on Sprint’s new LTE network sometime in the next few months. With top-of-the-line specs and Android 4.0, it’s sure to be a popular phone among Sprint customers!

The Lumia 900 and Titan II

Not to be overshadowed by a host of Android announcements, the Windows Phone platform is gaining two great new devices. The Lumia 900 from Nokia improves upon the already quite popular Lumia 800. With a bigger screen, more cameras, a better battery life, and more, the Lumia 900 is sure to be a big hit.

HTC has put out a Windows Phone sequel of its own, as well. The Titan II may look similar to last year’s model, but it packs some exciting features of its own. Chief among them are 4G data and a 16-megapixel (yes, you read that right!) camera. Yet another Windows Phone device that is sure to do quite well!

The Eee Pad MeMO

While its name may sound a bit unassuming, the Eee Pad MeMO is a serious tablet. ASUS has worked a bit of magic on this one, you could say. It features a 7” screen, Android 4.0, and a quad-core processor (read: fast!) all for just $249. For those keeping score, that’s just $50 more than a Kindle Fire and the same prices as the Nook Tablet. If this tablet lives up to its specs, it will likely be quite difficult to keep on the shelves!

The Year In Review

2011 was a big year for CompanionLink. We added numerous new features to our mobile CRM app, DejaOffice, while surpassing 100,000 active installations globally. We rebuilt our website from the ground up to make it even easier to find the sync solution you need. We released CompanionLink 5 with new features and a refreshed interface. And we’ve released new software, as well – CompanionLink for Windows Live.

But 2011 wasn’t just a big year for us – it was a big year for mobile technology! All year long, we worked hard to support some of the best phones and tablets yet: from the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S to the DROID Bionic, DROID Razr, Galaxy S II, and Galaxy Nexus to name just a few!

While the past year has certainly kept us busy, we’re not taking a break anytime soon! In fact, 2012 is already shaping up to be our biggest year yet. What can you expect from us in the coming year? A completely revised look for DejaOffice, an entirely new cloud sync service, support for even more great phones and tablets (think the rumored DROID 4 and iPad 3), and CompanionLink 6! We can’t go into the details on these things just yet, so be sure to watch the blog for updates!
